The Full Process Behind an Exterior Rendering

Updated: Apr 24, 2023

Exterior renderings are the best way to go to show the exterior design of architectural projects to be built.

What is an exterior rendering?

First of all, it's important to know what exactly an exterior 3d rendering is. Any 3D virtual representation of an open space in which the limits of the image exceed the ceiling and walls. In an exterior rendering, the camera is placed at human eye level.

What's the Process Behind an Exterior Rendering?

Let's split the process into different phases:

1st Phase. Gathering project documentation.

Before getting started, we need to gather all the information that fully defines the images to be made. In this case, being an exterior rendering, we will need the following documentation from you:

  • Project drawings (plans, elevations, and sections), as well as all the details that are relevant to visualization.

  • Camera angles. You can indicate the viewpoints right over the drawings.

  • On-site photographs, if needed.

  • Definition of landscaping and green areas, if necessary.- Atmosphere and general lighting. The best way to transmit this information is with reference images.

  • Reference images for all materials in the project.

  • What is the starting point? 2D drawings or a 3D model? If we start with a 3d model, the best way to export the file will be indicated beforehand in order to maintain the best compatibility between your software and ours, and to make the process as smooth as possible.

2nd Phase. Camera and general lighting tests.

After checking your indications about viewpoints and atmosphere, we will send you some first clay renderings to show you the most interesting camera angles and a first test for the overall lighting setup.

Once you confirm the viewpoints and the atmosphere, we will move on to the next phase.

3rd Phase. Detailing of the 3D model.

If a 3D model is provided, our team will add all complex-geometry objects to complete the scene, such as vegetation or furniture.

This way, we can manage the complexity of the file better and have full control of it.

4th Phase. Adding materials to the model.

It's time to materialise the model. For this, we need you to send us reference images for each project's materials. This way, we will be able to reach the desired result straightforwardly.

At the same time as we materialise the model, we will make the final adjustments to the lighting and atmosphere to put the focus on the elements that tell the project best.

5th Phase. Post-production.

After processing the images in high resolution, we will make the final adjustments in post-production.

In this part of the process, we will adjust brightness, contrast, saturation and other technical aspects, and we will also fix small errors in the 3D model.

We will also add cutouts to bring the image to life and make it connect with the viewer.

Tips for a Successful Project Development

We approach each image as a handcrafted process in which every detail is important. For an optimal result, good communication with the client is essential.

  • If possible, avoid making changes to the project during the image-making process.

  • In case of subtle modifications, make them in the corresponding phase. For example, change lighting or atmosphere in the second phase.

  • In each phase, a preview of the images will be sent to the client so that he/she can check that everything is going as planned. To make the best use of time, try to review these previews and give feedback on the same day.
